Charles W. “Chuck” Spurrier, 83, of Richmond, passed away on Thursday, October 7.

He was born in Loveland, Ohio on March 31, 1938 to Charles R. & Ada May Jones Spurrier. Chuck was a 1956 graduate of Whitewater High School and served 6 years in the US Army Reserve. He married the former Julia Fields 61 years ago on August 26, 1960. Their union was blessed with three children.

Chuck worked at Belden from 1959-69. He worked a short stint for the railroad and it was during this time that he began working in auto body repair part-time. In 1974, he began operating Spurrier’s Auto Body, working there for 41 years until his retirement. He also sold real estate for a time.

Chuck packed a lot of living into his 83 years. While he was in high school, he was a dance teacher for Arthur Murray Dance Studio and later taught country line dancing. In the 1960s, he raced stock cars and midgets and also tinkered with RC cars. He enjoyed trap shooting, bowling and competed in indoor archery contests as high as the state level. He was an avid IU Basketball fan and enjoyed playing golf, hunting, camping and fishing.

Chuck spent many years coaching Gra-Y, Girls softball, Optimist baseball, and was an Assistant Coach on the 1985 American Legion Post 65 baseball team that won the Sectional. He never stopped cheering and coaching his grandchildren from the sidelines and at home.

Chuck will be missed by his wife of 61 years, Julia Spurrier; his mother, Ada May Lock; his children, Christy Johnson & husband, Scott, Rob Spurrier & wife, Kim, Jeff Spurrier & wife, Tracy; sisters, Becky (Steve Moore) Wogoman, Brenda (Chuck) Feaster; brother, Ron (Sherry) Spurrier; five grandchildren, Justin Johnson, Josh Johnson, Sam Bentlage, Mackenzie VanWinkle and Ashlyn Spurrier; eight great-grandchildren, and several nieces & nephews.

Chuck was preceded in death by his father and step-mother, Mary Jayne Spurrier.

Family and friends may gather from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 12, at the Smith-McQuiston & Webster Funeral Home, 321 US 27 South, Fountain City.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 13 at the funeral home. Entombment will follow in Earlham Mausoleum.
