Bob White

Bob White, 81, of Whitewater, passed away on Thursday, August 25, at Reid Hospital.

Robert L. White was born in Richmond June 2, 1930 to Everett J. and Pearl H. Knoll White. As a boy, he danced and played drums in Jack’s Xylophone Band. He also played in the Ray Emperial Band on Saturdays. Bob gave up a music scholarship to college to take over his dad’s farm. He was a 1948 graduate of Whitewater High School and married the former Edna O. Doston on July 3, 1949. Their union spanned 57 years and was blessed with 3 daughters and 2 sons, which they raised together on their dairy farm near Whitewater.
Bob was a lifelong farmer and resident of the Whitewater community.  He climbed aboard a Whitewater High School bus in 1952 to begin 56 years of service to what would become the Northeastern Wayne School Corp, spanning at least 3 generations delivering students to and from school and school activities including band, basketball and football. He also served 56½ years as the team scorekeeper at basketball games at home and on the road without missing a game. Bob was a big help to the band program when their annual musicals were presented.
Bob was always active in the community and school. He served on the advisory board during the building of Northeastern High School and had served on the Franklin Township Advisory Board. He was an avid card player at the Richmond and Fountain City Senior Centers.
Bob enjoyed holding court daily at The Family Diner morning liar’s table and afternoon culture club and going to auctions. In 2007, he was the first recipient of the "ONE Great Community Salutes" award from the Richmond-Wayne County Chamber of Commerce.
Bob was a devoted husband who for years spent his days and nights caring for Edna during her long illness, enabling her to live at home until her death on March 9, 2007.
Bob will be missed by his daughters, Connie Jones and her husband, Lee, of Fort Myers, Florida; Cathy Showalter and her husband, David, of Fountain City; sons, Robert J. White and his wife, Janet, of Fountain City and Ron L. White and his wife, Rachael, of Greenville, Ohio; his sister, Betty Thomas, of Bethel; 11 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, Bob was preceded in death by 1 daughter, Christine White Townsend, on February 5, 2007; and 2 grandchildren.
Pastor David Anderson will conduct a funeral ceremony at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 29 at the Fountain City Wesleyan Church, 5600 US 27 North, Richmond. Entombment will follow in Earlham Memorial Mausoleum.
Family & friends may gather for visitation from 2-8 p.m. Sunday, August 28 in the Northeastern High School Gymnasium, 7295 US 27 North.
Memorial contributions may be sent to Northeastern Dollars For Scholars, 7295 US 27 North, Fountain City, In 47341, for the endowment of a scholarship in Bob’s memory.

The Northeastern community is richer for having Bob as a pillar of the community.  He always had a ready smile and witty comment.  My girls rode Bob's bus to school from Kindergarten until we moved from Indiana.  They all have wonderful memories of those bus rides.  And I knew that he was always on the watch for those Hartman girls!  God bless you and keep you Bob!  Our thoughts and prayers are with your family. - Marta Cummings Hartman

Bob was a fixture in the community, I am sure his absence will the felt not only at this time but in the many places that will seem empty without him.  Our thoughts go out to the entire family.

Bob was my bus driver for many years and a friend for many more.  I loved his big bear hugs and I cannot think about my childhood and school days with him being an integral part of it.  He was one of a kind in his dedication to students.  I wish everyone a "Bob White".

"White's" beautiful smile and contagious laugh will be missed by our family as well.  Many a poker-night stories will long be gone with the passing of this dear man!  God Bless to the family and may God help to comfort your aching hearts.

I was so very saddened to hear of Bob White's passing.  He was truly a remarkable man who had a smile for anyone and everyone.  It has been years since I have been to a basketball game but he was definetly right about the rivalry between Randolph Southern (my school) and Northeastern.  I remember going to games and Ronnie (that's what I always called him) being on the other side at the top of the bleachers and we always waved to each other.  We were very good friends for such a long time.  Time passes and you lose touch but I would like for him and his family to know that they are in my thoughts and prayers.  May God be with you as you go through this extremely difficult time.

I was so very saddened to hear of Bob's passing.  I remember many bus rides with him going to games.  He will be missed terribly.  He truly was the Knight number one fan.  God bless your family during this time.
