Carl Max Showalter

Carl Max Showalter, 92, formerly of Fountain City, passed away on Monday, August 4, 2025, at his home in Cincinnati.

He was born on August 20, 1932, to Carl N. & Emily Pierson Showalter of Fountain City. Max graduated from Fountain City High School, where he played on the 1949 basketball sectional championship team. He later graduated from Ball State University with a degree in education. He then served two years in the US Army in Germany.             Upon coming home, he met Jeanne Ann Fox. They married and spent 58 years together.

They raised three daughters, Debi, Sally and Stacey and both enjoyed long careers as teachers in the Muncie community. After retiring, they moved to family property in Fountain City, where Max enjoyed golfing, reading and mowing his acreage.

Max is survived by his daughters, Debi and Sally; son-in-law, Denny; grandson Christopher & wife, Rachelle; great-grandson Westley; brother, Robert; sister-in-law, Donna, and many nieces & nephews and their children.

Max was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanne; daughter Stacey; granddaughter Kate; and brothers Dick and Jim.

A memorial gathering will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 16, at the Smith & McQuiston Funeral Home, 321 US 27 South, Fountain City.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are encouraged for the Willow Grove Cemetery Association, PO Box 197, Fountain City, IN 47341 or the Ball State University Department of Education, Ball State University Foundation, 2800 W. Bethel Ave., Muncie, IN 47304.
