Mr. Herbert Stamper, 78, passed away at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 25, at Reid Hospital.
Born October 28, 1928 in Spout Springs, Kentucky, he was the son of Henry and Sarah Elizabeth Abney Stamper, both of whom preceded him in death. He was united in marriage to the former Valerie Jean "Jeanie" McMullen on May 9, 1953, a union that was blessed with 2 children. Herb was employed at the Greens Fork Elevator from 1957-1978. He then went to work at Joseph H. Hill & Co., retiring as a supervisor in 1993.Herb was a member of the Greens Fork United Methodist Church. Besides working, he enjoyed trading in his spare time.
Herb will be missed by his wife, Jeanie, of Greens Fork; his son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Janet Stamper, of Greens Fork; 4 grandchildren, Deanna Smith, Jeremy Stamper, Missy Peters and P.J. Hildebrand; 5 great-grandchildren, Kylee Smith, Karly Smith, Alana Stamper, Isiah Peters and Jacie Anderson; 2 brothers, Ralph Stamper, of Cambridge City and Gene Stamper, of Modoc, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Herb was preceded in death by his daughter, Karen Jean Stamper Hildebrand, on December 28, 1988; 5 sisters, Lilly Mae Hatton, Lucy Snowden, Bertha Snowden, Gertrude Charles and Catherine Lainhart, and 2 brothers, Clarence Stamper and Russell Stamper.
Visitation will be Sunday, October 28, at the Greens Fork United Methodist Church, with funeral services held at the church on Monday morning, October 29. Times will be announced later today.
Expressions of sympathy are encouraged to the Greens Fork Volunteer Fire Department. Cards will be available at the church.
