Jack Phelps, 95, formerly of Williamsburg and Fountain City, died of natural causes on April 4, 2025, at Friends Fellowship Community in Richmond.
He was born on August 5, 1929, in Richmond to Carl J. and Mary (Davies) Phelps. On June 17, 1956, he married Doris Bockhofer.
Jack graduated from Fountain City High School in 1947 and then joined the US Air Force. He served in the military as an MP in Weisbaden, Occupied Germany until 1952. After his military service, he attended Milwaukee School of Engineering and earned a Technical Certificate. Jack worked as a Distribution Engineer at Richmond Power and Light until retiring in 1991. He was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church in Richmond and was a member and Past Master of the Fountain City Masonic Lodge.
Throughout his life, Jack was an award-winning local artist who specialized in pen & ink drawings and etchings. His favorite subjects were historic sites, buildings, covered bridges and other scenes of Americana. Among his many commissions, he was especially proud of the opportunities to draw several buildings on the campus of Ball State University.
His wife, Doris, survives along withtheir children, Brent (Cindy) Phelps, of Beavercreek, OH; Ann (Kent) Schrock, of Goshen, IN; Grandchildren Amy (James) Heldreth, of Mentone; Matt Schrock, of Graham, TX; James Schrock, of Goshen, IN; step-grandson, Thomas Hart J.D., of Florida; one great-granddaughter and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Giles Phelps and sister Ceinwen Clark.
Visitation for Jack will be from Noon–1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 12, at the Smith-McQuiston & Webster Funeral Home, 321 US 27 South, Fountain City.
A funeral ceremony will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 12, at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Willow Grove Cemetery.
