Mary E. Nicholson

Mrs. Mary E. Nicholson, 89, passed away Friday, January 2, 2009 at Golden Living Center in Richmond.


She was born March 8, 1919 in Darke County, Ohio to Daniel E. and Orabelle Miller Hollinger, both of whom preceded her in death. She graduated Hollansburg High School in 1937 as class valedictorian. She shared 52 years of marriage to Henry Joseph Nicholson from April 17, 1938 until his death on November 4, 1990. She had cooked for the Mary E. Hill Home and had worked as a cook at the Fountain City School and many different restaurants including the former Parker's Blue Roof Restaurant. She was a member of the Cedar Grove Church of the Brethren for many years before transferring her membership to the Castine Church of the Brethren. She was formerly active in the Senior Citizens Community Center. She enjoyed crocheting and playing cards throughout her life.


Mrs. Nicholson will be missed by her daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce E. and John Conway, Fountain City; Shirley A. and Donald Atkins, Richmond; Susie D. and Terry Wilson, Greens Fork and Mary Ruth and Britt Buhler, Rushville; a son and daughter-in-law, Daniel W. and Darlene Nicholson, Richmond; 13 grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, 5 step-great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild, 2 step-great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.


In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Nicholson was preceded in death by 5 sisters and 1 brother.


A funeral ceremony will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, January 5 at the Smith & McQuiston Funeral Home, 321 US 27 South, Fountain City. Interment will follow in Willow Grove Cemetery.


Family and friends may gather for visitation from 3-6 p.m. on Sunday, January 4, at the funeral home.
