Melbourne Petry

Melbourne L. Petry, 90, of Fountain City, passed away peacefully Friday, July 11, at Rose Gate Village in Richmond.


Born February 5, 1918 in Preble County, Ohio, he was the son of Harley and Berzie Remington Petry.


He was united in marriage to the former Ina Mae Ruble on February 25, 1939. Together they raised four children and farmed near Fountain City, sharing 68 years together until her death on May 21, 2007.


Early on, Mr. Petry worked for International Harvester before going to work for Banning & Barnard Construction, retiring at age 60. He continued to enjoy working and teamed up with his son, working for Petry Plumbing until age 83. He enjoyed welding and woodworking, using his metal fabricating skills to build his own turning lathe, which he used for many of his wood projects. He camped often with his family and enjoyed tending his large gardens every year. He was a faithful member of the Fountain City Wesleyan Church.


Mr. Petry will be missed by his daughters, Carol Baxter, Mooresville, North Carolina and Sharon Mayberry, Fountain City; sons, Duane Petry, Fountain City and Larry Petry, Richmond; 8 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and 7 nieces.


Besides his parents and wife, Mr. Petry was preceded in death by 1 grandson, Calvin Mayberry; 1 son-in-law, Philip Mayberry; 1 brother, Robert Petry and 1 nephew, Teddy Petry.


A funeral ceremony will be conducted by Pastor Dave Anderson at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 15, at the Smith & McQuiston Funeral Home, 321 US 27 South, Fountain City. Interment will follow in Williamsburg Cemetery.


Family and friends may gather for visitation from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, July 14, at the funeral home.
