Melville A. Jay, 82, of Richmond, passed away Thursday, July 12, at Reid Hospital after a brief illness.
    He was born January 6, 1930 on the family farm in Webster, Indiana to Hershel D. & Edna I. Albin Jay. Mel graduated from Webster High School in 1948 and was later drafted into the US Marine Corps.
   After his discharge, Melville returned home to work on the family farm. He worked in production control, accounting and purchasing, always maintaining a strong work ethic.
   After retirement, Mel enjoyed renovating houses, attending auctions, family time and opening his home to missionaries. He loved his garden and took great pride in nurturing and watching it flourish under his loving touch. Melville was a loving, giving husband, father and grandfather.
   Mel was a charter member and past commandant of the Marine Corps League Whitewater Valley Detachment. He actively supported the detachment’s charitable contributions to our community including but not limited to Toys for Tots, Crumbo Scholarship Fund and the Elijah Blackie Pennington Whitewater Valley Motorcycle Club..
   He will be missed by his wife of 27 years, Carolyn Jay, of Richmond; daughter, Tonya Cox, of Richmond; daughters & sons-in-law, Theresa & Jim Clark, of Abington and Anita & John Kirksey, of Powell, OH; step-daughter, Annette Master, of Greensburg; step-sons, Michael Isaacs, of New Castle; Neil Master, of Mt. Pleasant, MI and David Master, of Daytona Beach, FL; sisters, Margaret Corbett (Robert) and Marilyn Clarke, both of Richmond; brother, Stuart Jay, of Webster; 19 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and several nieces & nephews and family friends, Warren Silvernail and Dick Wolfe.
   Mr. Jay was preceded in death by his parents and 1 sister, Janet Wright.
   A funeral ceremony will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 23, at the Smith & McQuiston Funeral Home, 321 US 27 South, Fountain City. Interment with military rites will follow in Webster Cemetery.
   Family & friends may gather for visitation from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, July 22, at the funeral home.
   Memorial contributions may be sent to the Marine Corps League, 200 South 9th Street, Richmond, IN 47374; the Boys & Girls Clubs of Wayne County, 1717 South L Street, Richmond, IN 47374; or Mission at the Cross, South 11th Street, Richmond, IN.
