James William Ladd, Sr., 82, of Williamsburg, passed away on Saturday, November 16, at Reid Hospital.
He was born on June 10, 1931 in Williamsburg to John Reuben and Cordie Mae Fleenor Ladd. He was a 1949 graduate of Williamsburg High School. He married his high school sweetheart, the former Lois Ann Laymon on September 17, 1949. That was the beginning of 64 years of marriage that was blessed with eight children, 17 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Ladd started working at the former Hoosier Store in 1949. He began working at Wayne Works in 1951 before becoming a milk man at Miller Dairy in 1953. From 1955-69, he was an independent driver for Wayne Dairy before rejoining Wayne Bus Division. In 1971, he formed Ladd Transit Service, Inc. and formed Ladd Custom Products in 1978.
Mr. Ladd was a charter member of the Williamsburg Lions Club and was a humble benefactor to his community and its youth. He organized the Wayne County Little League program in 1955 and served as commissioner for 17 years. He made sure the ball diamonds in Williamsburg had lights when the need arose. He helped improve traffic safety in Williamsburg in the early 1970s by adding stop signs at many intersections. He refereed basketball games in all the county schools for 20 years and umpired baseball for a couple of years. In the 1980s, he sponsored and helped coach a traveling women’s softball team known as Ladd’s.
Mr. Ladd will be missed by his wife of 64 years, Lois; children, Michael “Toby” Ladd, Susan Ladd, Joe Ladd and his wife, Mary; Tom Ladd and his wife, Michelle, Amy Ladd and Mary Dowler and her husband, Kevin; daughter-in-law Geneva Ladd; 15 grandkids and 12 great-grandkids.
Mr. Ladd was preceded in death by his sons, James “Jamie” Ladd, Jr., in 2009 and Dennis Ladd, in 1996; granddaughter, Brandi Renee Ladd; grandson, Joshua Tobias Ladd; and siblings Kate, Dave, Mae, Oris, Evelyn, Eula, Ethel, John Jr., Irene, Nora, Marg and Pat.
A funeral ceremony will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 21, in the Williamsburg Community Center gymnasium, 8441 Centerville Road North, Williamsburg. Interment will follow in Williamsburg Cemetery.
Family & friends may gather for visitation from 3-7 p.m. on Wednesday, November 20, and 10-11 a.m. on Thursday, November 21, in the gym.
